Shyamal Roy was born in Old Delhi in India and is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

Shyamal studied photography under various masters in Paris, France and attended the Nikon School of photography. His work has been exhibited in San Francisco, New York, and Paris. His photo book titled "Paris-Calcutta" won him the prestigious photojournalist of the year award from the Federation of Indians in America. He received the Distinguished Service Award from IIT Kharagpur for the two best-selling photo books he published to celebrate the institute's Diamond jubilee.

Shyamal Roy lives in the San Francisco bay area.
